Fetal Ventriculomegaly: Investigating Additional Brain Abnormalities by using MR Imaging
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background and Purpose: Fetal ventriculomegaly (VM), is known to have a prevalence of association with other brain abnormalities. By using in utero MR imaging (iuMR), we aimed to determine the prevalence of brain abnormalities other than VM and investigate the hypothesis that the prevalence of having additional brain abnormalities (ABA) increases with the degree of VM. Materials and Methods: We reviewed iuMR images of 75 fetuses. The enlarged ventricles were graded as mild (≤ 12mm), moderate (> 12 to ≤15mm), and severe (> 15mm). Prevalence of having ABA were calculated and compared among groups with different grades of VM. Results: ABA was shown in 67% of fetuses. The most frequent ABA was agenesis of the corpus callosum. The prevalence of having ABA increased with the degree of fetal VM in all groups. Severe VM was associated with a higher prevalence of ABA when compared with mild VM in the prevalence of having ABA being present when compared with mild VM. Conclusions: The prevalence of having ABA increases with the degree of fetal VM. Caution should be exercised that this trend of ABA does not apply to those fetuses with isolated VM by sonography due to the different subjects

Magnetic resonance imaging of the fetal brain and spine: an increasingly important tool in prenatal diagnosis: part 2.
Fetal MR imaging is an increasingly available technique used to evaluate the fetal brain and spine. This is made possible by recent advances in technology, such as rapid pulse sequences, parallel imaging, and advances in coil design. This provides a unique opportunity to evaluate processes that cannot be approached by any other current imaging technique, and it affords a unique opportunity for ...

متن کاملComparison the Accuracy of Fetal Brain Extraction from T2-Half-Fourier Acquisition Single-Shot Turbo Spin-Echo (HASTE) MR Image with T2-True Fast Imaging with Steady State Free Precession (TRUFI) MR Image by Level Set Algorithm
Background Access to appropriate images of fetal brain can greatly assist to diagnose of probable abnormalities. The aim of this study was to compare the suitability of T2-True Fast Imaging with Steady State Free Precession (T2-TRUFI), and T2-Half-Fourier Acquisition Single-Shot Turbo Spin-Echo (T2- HASTE( magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to extract the fetal brain using the level set algorithm...
متن کاملFetuses with ventriculomegaly diagnosed in the second trimester of pregnancy by in utero MR imaging: what happens in the third trimester?
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although MR imaging of the fetal brain has been shown to provide additional diagnostic information, the optimal timing of the study and the value of repeat studies remain unclear. The primary purpose of this study was to look for structural abnormalities of the fetal brain shown at 30-32 weeks' gestational age but not on the 20-24 weeks' study in fetuses originally referr...
متن کاملFetal cytomegalovirus infection of the brain: the spectrum of sonographic findings.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection can cause a wide range of brain anomalies. These changes have been well described postnatally, but descriptions of their in utero evolution are scarce. The purpose of this study was to analyze the sonographic spectrum of intracranial abnormalities in fetuses with proved CMV infection and to determine characteristic patterns of th...
